Filters/Cartridges

National Pool Service sells, repairs, and installs all three types of pool filters: Diatomaceous Earth (DE), Sand, and Cartridge. A pool can be properly maintained with any system. However, the type of filter you choose depends mostly on the size of your pool.

  • The DE filter provides the best water clarity and is the most efficient filter available, trapping particles as small as 3-5 microns. DE filters are cleaned by backwashing the filter when the pressure gauge reads about 8-10 pounds higher than its clean reading. After backwashing, a DE filter powder in slurry form is added to the filter.

  • Sand filters are the easiest filters to operate and are known to be the lowest maintenance of all the pool filters. The sand in this type of filter can last up to 10 years. This filter works by pushing dirty water through the sand from the top and clean water exits out from the bottom. Cleaning this filter is very easy! Just run the filter in reverse and dump the waste water to “backwash” the filter. Next, turn the filter to rinse mode to repack the sand. Finally, return the handle back to filter mode to complete the cleaning process! This needs to be done every few weeks or when your pressure gauge reads about 8-10 pounds higher than the reading when it is clean.

  • Cartridge filters come in many sizes and require a pleated type cartridge. This cartridge should last between 1 and 2 years if cared for properly. With a cartridge filter, water passes through the filter and the cartridge captures the debris. As the cartridge gets dirty, the pressure will increase. When the pressure gauge reads about 5 to 8 pounds higher than the normal clean reading, the cartridge will need to be removed and cleaned. This can be done by hosing off the pleats of the cartridge. If the cartridge is very dirty, it can be soaked in a trisodium phosphate (TSP) solution. Replacement cartridges come in many sizes, from as small as 6 sq. ft. to as large as 200 sq. ft. We carry original Hayward Cartridges as well as Clean & Clear, Pleatco, and Unicel generic cartridges.
